Just Like a Dream

(From “Just Like a Dream”)

Just like a dream that comes in the night,

Just like a dream that fades in the light.

Some visions fair drive us to despair,

And they but seem to dissolve in the air.

No sign remains and dark are our days;

Dolour and pain are with us always.

Lovely things fade and beauty takes flight,

Like music that’s played like a dream in the night.

Take the lovely flowers !

How long do they last?

In a few short hours

The living hues are past.

When the sun with crimson the evening heavens stains,

Darkness all too soon descends and nothingness remains.

Just like a dream that comes in the night,

Just like a dream that fades in the light.

But dreams can be our memory,

And they may come to set our souls free.

Beauty will change, but is ever renewed,

And strange as it seems is with new life endued.

Ugliness may no more be supreme,

But beauty will stay in our minds like a dream.
