The Man in the Moon
(From “Fenella and the Moonflower”)
If someone goes mad and becomes a crazy loon;
If poets start singing of snowdrops in June;
If under the lilacs romantic girls swoon;
Everyone blames the Moon.
If lovers of witching blue optics will croon;
And every cracked dish runs away with the spoon;
If Yn Tarroo Ushtey is seen in the Dhoon;
Everyone blames the Moon.
When next you are writing a song or a glee
Please leave out the Moon ; have some pity for me !
Its really not fair, if you give it a thought,
Why all this trouble to my door is brought;
No wonder its driving me almost distraught,
Everyone blaming the Moon.
Take all the song writers, why, each one is caught
At the same hanky-panky. I think that they ought
Have to answer such crimes in a magistrate’s court,
And be shot in a bunch to the Moon.
So if you are thinking of writing a glee
Please leave out the Moon ; have some pity for me !
