This Fair Land
What shall we do with this fair land which now
We occupy for a brief breathing space,
Ere to our children we its future leave?
Can we a richer heritage endow
Than what was left us by a former race,
And vanished glories carefully retrieve?
Or shall we to some grosser Moloch bow,
That promises rewards specious and base,
And which from us our birthright true will thieve
Whilst bending on us a fair-seeming brow?
Here is a trust for which we have no test ;
A trusteeship conferred unmerited.
‘Tis ours to see that what’s inherited
By our own children is by Heaven blessed !
