To You
Poem to Trudy
(From sick bay in Ghent)
And was it Easter when we first resolved
To walk no longer separately, to live
One for the other ? Then alone revolved
The sun for us, for us alone did give
Those love-awaking rays. The budding earth
For us gave of its best, for us did hang
Its fresh green banners on the trees, gave birth
To joy unknown before. All nature sang
In cadence sweet with love ineffable.
And in the scented dusk the stars were low
And all their golden lamps our nights did fill
Where’er we wandered with a magic glow.
Twelve years have fled since first we pledged our troth,
And love still burgeons in unhindered growth.
