Good Friday
They then inscribed the legend “King of Jews”
Where He was hanging from a wooden cross,
Crucified on a hill between two thieves.
They cast lots for His garments and did choose
What they would have of His; there was no loss.
They mocked “Come down and prove what none believes;
You who saved others save yourself !” The news
Of that soul’s passing made Iscariot toss
His spirit to the pit where no power shrieves,
And rent the Temple veil. God did refuse
To fight, but gave himself that men might live.
Not nails, not crown of thorns, now pierce Him through,
But man’s reluctance to begin anew
And to believe that he himself must give !
