The Choosing

My boy, that road leads to the distant town,
And this one stretches to the waiting sea.
Hast thou determined what thy choice will be?
This one leads upward, but the other down;
This one is narrow, that one wide; thine own
Choice falls upon thee. Is it luxury
And ease, or care and pain that beckon thee?
This wide paved road leads to the distant town
And in the mellow distance spires gleam bright
Where thou canst have thy fill of sweet delight,
And there thy thirst for pleasure thou canst slake!
This narrow path, this up-hill winding track
Leads to the heights! Choose now, no looking back.
‘Twixt death and life, which pathway wilt thou take?
